The Benefits of Exercise and Sleep

Most people are aware of the benefits of exercise and building muscular strength as well as cardiovascular endurance. However, did you know that regular exercise has also been proven to help people get a good night’s sleep? Research at the Johns Hopkins Center for Sleep has proven that exercise helps people fall asleep faster and improves sleep quality.

Thirty minutes of moderate exercise helps release endorphins and raise your core body temperature. These two reactions can assist with deep sleep, where the body and mind have an opportunity to regenerate. The key is to find a mode of exercise you enjoy (weight training, swimming, jogging, etc.) and be consistent.

One factor to take into consideration is the timing of exercise. Some people find that exercising too late in the evening (1-3 hours before bedtime) can keep them up at night. While others find that timing does not have any impact on their ability to sleep. It will take some trial and error to find what works best for you. Once you do, the benefits of good sleep will make you feel like a new person!
