Water aerobics classes are offered year-round at The Houstonian

Beat the heat and join a water aerobics class!

Deep water fitness is a full-body, non-impact workout and the benefits are astounding. It enhances cardiovascular and muscle strength, increases endurance, and improves posture and form. Every move you make engages opposing muscle groups because of the resistance provided by water. The buoyancy of the water supports your limbs making it easier for joint mobility. While working out in the water is definitely easier on your joints, please don’t get the notion that it is an "easy” workout. It is challenging in every way while also giving you a sense of well-being. We wear a flotation belt that allows you to learn how to stabilize--meaning your core is constantly engaged, and no, you don’t have to be a swimmer to benefit from this workout! It takes time to get used to wearing a flotation belt and to achieve correct form, but if you stick with it, you will reap the benefits.  – Charlette Strom cstrom@houstonian.com

Beat the Heat
Heat-related illnesses are progressive conditions caused by overexposure to heat. Heat-related emergencies usually can be reversed if recognized in the early stages. If not cared for, these may progress to heat stroke, a life-threating condition.

Follow these best practices to protect yourself and those around you from a heat-related illness:
  • Move to a cool place.
  • Apply a cool, wet towel to the back of the neck.
  • Keep hydrated. One of the reasons we have "Safety Breaks” and "Children’s R&R” at the Club is to help prevent fatigue in swimmers by providing a break for rest, recovery, and rehydration. Swimming for a long period of time can be strenuous on the body and swimmers often forget to rest and rehydrate.

Pool Safety Reminders
  • No diving in the Sports Pool unless supervised by a swim instructor.
  • Using the Waterslide: Only one rider at a time. All riders must be seated feet-first while lying on their back with arms across their chest.
  • The Sports Pool is reserved for exercise use (lap swimming) and water aerobics classes only. Lounging/playing in the Sports Pool is not permitted.
